Google has announced a new initiative to provide university students across six African countries with free access to its premium AI plan, Google AI Pro, for 12 months.
The offer is open to students aged 18 and above in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. It aims to support digital learning and research by giving students access to Google’s advanced AI tools, including the Gemini 2.5 Pro model.
According to Google, the initiative is designed to help students build foundational AI skills and prepare for a future in which artificial intelligence plays an increasingly central role in education and work.

Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the move reflects Google’s belief in the innovative potential of young Africans. He noted that providing access to advanced AI tools will enable students to excel academically and creatively, while also contributing to the growth of technology-driven innovation across the continent.
The Google AI Pro plan includes features that support academic and creative work such as research assistance, summarization of academic materials, and organization of study notes. It also includes tools for creating short videos and 2TB of cloud storage to help students manage coursework and research data.
Eligible students can activate the 12-month free plan by visiting gemini.google/students and verifying their university status. The offer will be available from October 7 to December 9, 2025, and while verification is required, students will not be charged.
This initiative builds on Google’s broader investment in Africa’s digital development through programs such as Digital Skills for Africa and the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa, which have supported millions of people and businesses across the continent.
