Gombe: Governor, NUJ mourn 5 killed in Lawanti LPG tanker tragedy

From Abdulrazaq Mungadi, Gombe

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have expressed sorrow over the tragic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker accident in Lawanti village, Akko Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of five persons and left several others injured.

Governor Yahaya personally attended the Janazah (funeral prayer) held at the palace of the District Head of Lawanti, where he described the incident as a devastating loss not only to the affected families and the Lawanti community but to Gombe State as a whole.

He condoled with the bereaved families on behalf of the state government and people of Gombe, assuring them of government’s solidarity at this difficult time.

The Governor also extended condolences to the Lawanti community over the earlier loss of seven of its members who died in a separate incident while travelling to Maiduguri in December 2025, noting that the cumulative tragedies have deeply saddened the state.

As an immediate intervention, Governor Yahaya announced a donation of ₦5 million to the families of the five deceased to assist with burial and related expenses. He further pledged that the state government would take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

Commending the Lawanti community for their calmness and respect for the rule of law in the aftermath of the tragedy, the Governor described their restraint as a clear demonstration of discipline and peace.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Gombe State Council of NUJ joined the government and people of the state in mourning the victims, describing the incident as a painful blow to the community and the state at large.

The union specifically commended Governor Yahaya for his hands-on, people-centred leadership, citing his presence at the funeral and the ₦5 million donation as strong indicators of empathy and responsive governance.

The NUJ also applauded the Lawanti community for their maturity and called on relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and strengthen safety measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.

Both the Governor and the NUJ prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant them Aljannatul Firdaus, and give their families and community the strength to bear the irreparable losses.

The deceased were identified as Babayo Bello Konkeje (60), Ahmadu Adamu Konkeje (43), Yahaya Manu Konkeje (40), Haruna Abdu Shulto (45) and Yana Alhaji Jarami Dunumari (51).
