Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu has been ranked as Nigeria’s number one university by Times Higher Education (THE) for its outstanding staff-to-student ratio and quality of teaching.
This recognition was announced by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, during a press briefing in Enugu.
According to Anieke, the ranking was released some weeks ago, highlighting GOUNI’s excellence in key academic metrics.
He emphasised that “a favourable staff-to-student ratio is a crucial indicator of superior educational quality.”
In addition to being ranked first in Nigeria for staff-to-student ratio, he noted that, “GOUNI has consistently secured a place among the top 10 private universities in the country in previous rankings.
“It is also recognised among the 200 best universities in Africa and has maintained a position within the top 40 to 50 universities in Nigeria.
“Among the private institutions, it remains in the top five and holds the title of the leading university in Southeastern Nigeria.”
Anieke attributed these achievements to the university’s commitment to academic excellence, hard work and a robust monitoring system designed to enhance the performance of both faculty and students.
He noted that each student was paired with a mentor, fostering a supportive learning environment.
On the ranking organisation’s credibility, Anieke explained that the UK-based organisation evaluates universities based on their academic practices.
He stressed that success cannot be achieved through corrupt means, affirming that genuine quality and dedication lead to global recognition.
