Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Rugby League Association, Ade Adebisi has revealed that the historic fixture against Ghana reflects growth for the sport.

The NRLA marked a historic weekend at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Legon, Accra, with a dominant showing from its women’s national team, Green Falcons and a significant milestone for the men’s side, which fielded a fully homegrown squad for the first time in an international test match.

The women’s fixture saw Green Falcons begin strongly with an early try from Rukayat Akinade, followed by a finish from Blessing Aladeyelu, converted by Adaeze Innocent. The second half highlighted Nigeria’s depth and control, with multiple tries from Success Iyoha, further scores from Blessing Aladeyelu, two tries from Abiola Obazuaye, and another from Faustina Akeje. Success Iyoha also added a conversion, rounding off a confident performance that underscored the rapid rise of women’s rugby league within Nigeria’s domestic system.

The men’s match marked a major moment for the NRLA as Nigeria presented its first-ever fully homegrown squad. The match ended 36–24 in favour of Ghana, representing Nigeria’s first full international loss since the formation of the men’s team. Nigeria opened with a try and conversion from Gabriel John. In the second half, Christian Williams, Gabriel John, and Akeem Yusuf added tries, with John converting all three. The association described the result as part of the sport’s natural progression as domestic structures continue to strengthen.

“This is not a setback but an important step in our evolution,” said Adebisi.

“Fielding a fully homegrown squad is a major achievement. We are building depth, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability for rugby league in Nigeria.”

“The story of Nigeria Rugby League is only just beginning,” Adebisi added.

Adebisi also highlighted Nigeria’s expanding international presence, noting the strong performances of the NRLA’s heritage teams in Australia and the United Kingdom, which contribute to a growing global talent pool.

The NRLA congratulated Ghana on their victory and commended the hosts for a well-organised matchday at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium. Officials described the event as a positive reflection of rugby league’s growth in West Africa and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to strengthening pathways for both men and women.
