Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s potential return from injury after the international break may be more complicated than initially anticipated.

A comeback against Girona in the mid-September Catalan derby was discussed, according to sources earlier this week. Still, RAC1 indicates that the team is worried about the weakness of his ankle.

“A small blow or a strong tackle could end up causing a relapse even though he can return in a few weeks,” sources claim. The 27-year-old reportedly suffers from chronic instability in his ankle, making it susceptible to further injury even after recovery.

Barcelona worries that De Jong might require surgery to regain full fitness. The only method to properly address the ligament instability would be with this operation. The club’s anxiety has increased because they have fewer choices in midfield due to Marc Bernal’s ACL injury, which ended the season.

Last season, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman accused Barcelona of rushing De Jong back prematurely from a previous injury. The club’s handling of his current situation will be closely monitored, as a relapse could have significant consequences for both player and team.
