A new chapter in Samson Oriyomi Yusuf’s artistic journey unfolds this August as he presents Fragments of the Unseen, a solo exhibition opening from August 1st to 5th, 2025 at Yenwa Art Gallery, Lagos.
The exhibition introduces an extended body of portrait works that continue his engagement with human emotion, while pushing his visual language into deeper and more reflective territory.
In this collection, Yusuf turns his attention to what is not immediately obvious. The paintings do not attempt to tell complete stories at first glance. Instead, they offer moments.
A subtle expression. A downward gaze. A face partly illuminated while the rest remains in quiet shadow. These fragments create space for interpretation. The viewer is not given everything at once. There is room to observe, to think, and to return for a second look.
The works in Fragments of the Unseen are built on careful composition. Backgrounds are restrained, allowing the subject to remain central. Colour choices are deliberate and controlled. Earth tones, deep neutrals, and soft highlights guide the mood of each piece.
Texture is layered with patience, giving the surfaces a tactile presence that adds to the emotional depth of the portraits. Every brushstroke appears considered, contributing to a steady and grounded visual experience.
This exhibition also reflects a shift in pace. Rather than dramatic contrast or bold statements, the collection settles into a quieter rhythm. The figures feel introspective.
They appear to hold thoughts that are not fully spoken. In doing so, Yusuf explores how identity can be complex and incomplete. People often reveal themselves in parts, shaped by memory, environment, and personal history. The unseen aspects of experience are not empty. They are active and influential, even when hidden.
The decision to focus on fragments speaks to a broader human reality. No one is entirely visible to the world. There are layers beneath expression. There are emotions that remain private. Through this body of work, Yusuf acknowledges that truth can exist in sections rather than full disclosure.
The exhibition becomes less about spectacle and more about recognition. Visitors may find themselves relating to the quiet strength in the subjects or reflecting on their own unseen experiences.
As anticipation builds ahead of the opening, Fragments of the Unseen is expected to draw collectors, curators, fellow artists, and members of the art community who have followed Yusuf’s evolving practice. The exhibition offers an opportunity to witness his continued growth in technical control and emotional focus.
The public is invited to attend and experience the exhibition during its five day run at Yenwa Art Gallery in Lagos. Fragments of the Unseen opens August 1st and closes August 5th, 2025.
