The role of women in conflict resolution took a centre stage on Wednesday as CLEEN Foundation initiated a bold move to highlight women’s pivotal role in conflict mediation and prevention in Plateau and Kaduna states.
Executive Director, Cleen Foundation, Gad Shamaki, speaking at the occasion held at Cryspan Hotel, Jos, emphasized the critical need to harness women’s unique perspectives and skills in addressing the multifaceted challenges of conflict and insecurity.
He said that the one-day sensitization campaign was aimed at amplifying the voices of women within state peace structures, a move that promises a transformative impact on peace and security dynamics.
Peter said, “Gathering here today underscores the critical importance of integrating women into state peace structures. Their unique perspectives and skills are imperative for sustainable peace-building efforts
“We aim to raise awareness and empower women to take on leadership roles in mediation and conflict prevention initiatives.
Together, we can build a more inclusive and peaceful society for generations to come.” He stated.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Plateau state , Alexander Anlong Nyelong, who echoed Peter’s sentiments, underlinef the government’s steadfast commitment to advancing women’s roles in peacebuilding efforts.
He emphasized the importance of translating discussions into tangible actions, with unequivocal support from the state government led by Barrister Caleb Mutfwang.
Bernard Ekobay, a Senior Program Officer at CLEEN Foundation, provided a comprehensive overview of the SCALE Mediation Project.
Ekobay highlighted the strategic focus of the project on enhancing women’s participation and leadership in conflict resolution efforts.
According to him, the SCALE Mediation Project aims to empower women to play a more active role in resolving conflicts and promoting peace within their communities.
He emphasized the significance of creating an enabling environment for women to engage in mediation processes effectively.
He added that through capacity building, coordination, and oversight, the project seeks to equip women with the necessary tools and resources to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding initiatives.
Grace Joseph, who provided insights from the Women Mediators Network in Plateau State, highlighted the mandate, roles, and successes of women mediators in the region.
Rhoda Udanyi, a lead women mediator, delved into the crucial role of mediators in developing conflict prevention plans tailored to the specific needs of communities in Plateau State.
