The federal government has initiated plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists (NAH) on nationwide groundwater mapping and hydrogeological data collection.

The aim is to improve water resource management, food security and sustainable national development.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Prof Joseph Utsev made this known while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

Prof Utsev said the partnership would support the development of reliable groundwater data and strengthen the management of Nigeria’s underground water resources, which remain critical to domestic water supply, agriculture and industrial activities.

According to him, accurate groundwater mapping is essential for evidence-based planning, sustainable water development and effective regulation of water schemes undertaken by individuals, communities and governments across the country.

The minister noted that the collaboration would also enhance efforts to address growing water challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of groundwater resources.

He commended the association for its contributions to groundwater exploration, management, protection and public advocacy, describing its members as key stakeholders in the nation’s water resources sector.

Prof Utsev reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working with professional bodies and technical experts to improve service delivery and strengthen institutional capacity in the water sector.

He further assured the delegation of the ministry’s readiness to collaborate on strategic initiatives, including the development of the National Water Compact and environmental impact assessments for water-related projects.

To fast-track the partnership, the minister directed relevant officials of the ministry to develop modalities for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering agreed areas of cooperation.

Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists, Mrs Fashe-Adam Francisca, said the association has continued to play a leading role in groundwater exploration, resource management, policy development and public awareness on sustainable water use.

She called for technical collaboration on nationwide groundwater mapping and hydrogeological data collection to facilitate the production of reliable groundwater maps for planning and development purposes.

She also advocated the inclusion of certified hydrogeologists in ministry projects and national assignments to ensure professional standards and technical efficiency.
