The Federal Government has completed the limited rehabilitation of the Kaga–Gubio road in Borno State, a strategic corridor linking local communities to Maiduguri and neighbouring Yobe State. The development was confirmed in a statement published on the Ministry of Works’ official website on Thursday.
The rehabilitation, covering Sections I and II near Benisheik Town, aims to improve mobility, restore critical transport links, and support economic recovery across the North East. According to the Ministry of Works, the project is expected to ease transportation challenges, enhance connectivity between rural communities and urban markets, and facilitate the safe movement of agricultural produce.
“In another vein, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State Council, Abdulkarim Haruna, inaugurated the completed limited rehabilitation of Kaga–Gubio Road, Sections I and II outside Benisheik Town, on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE,” the statement read.
Engr. Salihu Adamu, the Federal Controller of Works in Borno, described the road project as vital for strengthening commercial activity within the corridor. He noted that rehabilitating the route would reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and support the broader socio-economic recovery of the region.
The ministry emphasized that the rehabilitation is part of a broader set of emergency and special works designed to protect existing infrastructure and maintain mobility in areas affected by security challenges. Contractors sourcing materials have adapted to local constraints, bringing laterite from Ngamdu near the Yobe border and stone from Shira town in Bauchi State to sustain progress along the corridor.
Beyond the Kaga–Gubio road, the Ministry of Works disclosed that rehabilitation of the Maiduguri–Monguno road continues despite security threats and logistical difficulties. Multiple construction teams are active on-site, completing stone base works and shoulder construction. Asphalt laying is expected to commence once bitumen deliveries are completed.
The Federal Government reiterated that completing these strategic routes is essential for restoring connectivity, facilitating trade, and strengthening resilience in the North East. The improvement of the Kaga–Gubio road comes amid intensified military operations targeting insurgent groups in the region, underscoring the government’s commitment to economic recovery alongside security stabilization.
By restoring access and enabling safer transport of goods, the partial rehabilitation of the Kaga–Gubio road represents a critical step toward reviving commerce, linking isolated communities, and supporting the long-term development of Borno and its neighbouring states.
