The federal government will start building the South-East and South-South parts of a coastal highway next week. Minister of Works David Umahi made the announcement Monday, stating that the Tinubu administration aims to finish these projects on time.
Umahi explained that the coastal highway will boost the economy and national growth. The Akwa Ibom section kicks off on Monday, 14 April 2025. The Akwa Ibom State spur follows on Tuesday, 15 April. Then, the Trans-Sahara Road spur in Ebonyi State begins on Wednesday, April 16.
He said, “Yesterday, the Federal Ministry of Works under my watch met in Lagos over the progress of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project; a game-changer for inclusive economic growth and progressive national prosperity. This project will serve as a formidable evacuation corridor, boosting tourism, trade, agriculture, aquaculture, and maritime services.”

The highway will include CCTV for safety and quick response, he added. Plus, it will use sustainable designs with low emissions and tree planting for the environment. “I want to assure Nigerians that we are committed to delivering quality infrastructure that will improve their standard of living,” Umahi stated.
He thanked Nigerians for supporting the Renewed Hope road plans. However, he tackled false claims about the project harming properties. “I want to assure the public that these claims are irresponsible and delusive,” he said.
Umahi also announced the upcoming events. “I’m pleased to announce the upcoming flag-off events for the Calabar end of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on Monday, April 14, 2025, the Akwa Ibom State spur on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, and the Trans-Sahara Road spur in Ebonyi State on Wednesday, April 16, 2025,” he noted.
He ended with a pledge. “Under the leadership of Mr President, we are determined to deliver awarded projects within record time. Let’s work together towards a brighter future for Nigerians,” he said.
