FERMA kicks off 2023 road maintenance projects in North East II Zone

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has officially kicked off the maintenance projects for the year 2023 in the North East II Zone, which comprises Gombe, Bauchi, and Adamawa States.

The project starts with the flag-off of the 5th phase of road construction in Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe. The project is aimed at addressing the menace of gully erosion while opening up the facility for infrastructural and further development work.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the zonal coordinator, North East II, Engr. Irikefe Eugene Baror assured of the agency’s commitment to improving the road network within the hospital to make it safe and convenient for all.

The coordinator explained that the 5th phase of the road projects in FTH as well as other parts of the region is a clear demonstration of FERMA’s commitment to maintaining federal roads and bridges across the country.

He assured that the works under the 2023 maintenance project will be executed with a high level of professionalism and accountability, taking into account the safety of road users, which he emphasized is critical for the country.

Shortly after flagging off the road project in FTH Gombe, the zonal coordinator led by the federal road maintenance engineer, Engr. Charles Avishigh inspected the intervention site at Kashere in Akko Local Government Areas (LGA) of Gombe as well as some critical washout sections and the dilapidated bridge abutment and embankment washed-out in Dadin-Kowa along Gombe/Biu road and a washed out bridge at Gombe/Potiskum road.

He noted that the agency is aware of washed-away roads within the region and promises to fix the washed-out roads and bridges that pose a hazard to commuters.

Speaking on behalf of FTH Gombe, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi, appreciated FERMA for stepping up to rescue the hospital in terms of road network. Represented by the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) Prof. Sani Adamu revealed that the intervention works executed by the agency has led to various development of the hospital.

Meanwhile, the contractor in charge of the FHT Gombe road project, Naziru Mustapha explained that the ongoing road construction consists of a total of 700 meters of earthwork, 600 meters of asphalt laid roadway, complemented by a 500 meters of drainage infrastructure on both sides and one meter-wide shoulders for added safety and convenience.

According to him, “Such comprehensive measures are indicative not only of the thoroughness with which this project is being executed but also its potential to significantly improve movements within the hospital.”
