A female lawyer, two other ladies and two men have been arrested in Umuahia, the Abia State capital over illicit drugs, even as drugs worth 1,217kg were also seized from them.
The female lawyer, whose name was given as Adaobi Nweke, was arrested along with others at number 23 Arochukwu Street by Calabar Road, Umuahia.
Disclosing this in Umuahia, Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu said the State Government, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abia Command, made the arrests and seizure during a string operation carried out in a joint operation in Umuahia.
Emetu thanked the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland Security and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for the successful operation. He said the Abia State Government was committed to flushing out all forms of criminality, describing illicit drugs as the bedrock of all criminal activities.
The deputy governor said Abia is not a haven for criminals and warned all drug kingpins and other criminals in the state to relocate or face arrests.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Homeland security, who shed more light on the incident, explained: “On February 14, 2024, just before midnight, the office of the Governor on Homeland Security in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Abia Command, conducted a successful joint operation on the premises of one Miss Adaobi Nweke at number 23 Arochukwu Street by Calabar Road where the joint team seized a very large amount of prohibited drugs, like cocaine, cannabis, metamephetamin which is called mkpurumiri and cash sum of more than N500,000.” He said Nweke and others were arrested during the raid. He informed that the operatives also raided a popular hotel around Downbelow area in Umuahia.
He said the state government has declared war on hard drugs and all forms of criminality in the state, and advised perpetrators to desist forthwith or face the wrath of the law.
