Federal workers may, from next week, join university workers to down tools, if the Federal Government fails to pay backlog of salaries and other allowances.
The workers, under the umbrella of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), have threatened that unless the federal government pays promotion arrears, outstanding salaries, and other allowances, on or before September 18, 2017, they would shut down government.
“In view of the foregoing, ASCSN has given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum, with effect from September 18, 2017, within which to settle debts owed federal workers failing which a three-day warning strike will start in federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs throughout the country,” the union stated.
ASCSN Secretary General, Alade Lawal, lamented that for more than two years, government had been promising to pay workers outstanding entitlements without doing so.
“It is rather unfortunate that the same federal government that has given state governments bailouts, up to three times, to settle the entitlements owed their workers, takes delight in punishing its own employees by denying them their legitimate benefits,” he said.
