FCTA workers defy JUAC, resume work despite strike directive

FCTA workers strike

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Workers at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) ignored a fresh directive from the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) to prolong their strike, showing up for work on Thursday.

JUAC Secretary, Abdullahi Umar Saleh, issued the order on Wednesday, urging staff to stay home and pray for the strike’s success. The statement declared: “The strike continues as earlier declared by the JUAC. Staff are encouraged to stay at home to continuously participate in daily prayers for the success of the strike.”

Yet visits to FCTA and FCDA offices revealed workers actively carrying out duties, defying the call. Speaking anonymously, one FCTA staffer explained: “The court has said we should come to work and we have no option. This is the last week of January—we expect salaries. If we don’t come, how will we get paid?”

The union’s push came a day after the National Industrial Court in Abuja, on January 27, 2026, granted an interlocutory injunction sought by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the FCTA. Justice E.D. Subilim ruled that strikes must halt once a dispute reaches the court, stating: “An order of interlocutory injunction is hereby granted, restraining [workers] from further embarking on any industrial action… pending the determination of this suit.”

Acting FCT Civil Service Head, Mrs Nancy Sabanti, reinforced the order with a January 27 circular, directing all secretariats, departments and agencies to maintain attendance registers and ensure immediate resumption, while pledging commitment to staff welfare.
