Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, has announced the disbursement of $25,000 each to 10 communities in the FCT as part of the pilot phase of the Community Revolving Fund (CRF).
The initiative is a key component of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, according to a statement by her media aide, Austine Elemue.
During a presentation ceremony in Abuja, Mahmoud highlighted that the funding was intended to empower local communities through their respective CRF Management Committees.
She noted that the CRF was designed to promote sustainable land and water management strategies while fostering climate-smart agricultural practices.
“The Community Revolving Fund is a pivotal element of our strategy to enhance agro-climatic resilience at both community and household levels,” Mahmoud stated.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilise the funds wisely and responsibly, emphasising that timely repayment was crucial for the fund’s sustainability and to enable future beneficiaries access similar support.

The 10 communities benefiting from the initiative include Dafa, Gbako, Sheda, Pukafa, Ike, Tekpese, Wako, Ashara, Gbawuji, and Rugan Bature. The minister expressed optimism that this financial support would significantly improve livelihoods and contribute to the socio-economic development of these areas.
In addition to the monetary disbursement, Mahmoud also flagged-off the distribution of essential equipment aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability. This includes 60 solar-powered water pumping machines for Community Interest Groups (CIGs), 30 motorcycles for FCT Forest Guards to aid in conservation efforts, and a water tanker along with a multipurpose truck to support reforestation activities.
“The timing of this initiative is particularly significant as it aligns with the Federal Government’s strategic efforts to combat the escalating food crisis in Nigeria. It reflects the FCT administration’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable groups and fostering a more equitable and resilient territory,” she said.
Mahmoud extended her gratitude to the World Bank for its invaluable support in implementing the ACReSAL project and acknowledged the contributions of the Project Coordinator from the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU).
Earlier in the event, Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Lawan Geidam, elaborated on the objectives of the CRF. He noted that it aims to empower local communities by providing financial resources necessary for implementing innovative strategies that enhance agricultural productivity and ensure food security.
Geidam expressed satisfaction that after a long journey, the FCT has joined other states in implementing this crucial fund. He assured attendees that the secretariat would monitor the effective utilisation of the funds for their intended purposes.
