The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has congratulated Professor Tunde Musibau Akanni on his investiture as a Fellow of the Society of Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), describing the honour as recognition of his contributions to journalism, development communication and conflict-sensitive reporting.

In a letter dated October 7, 2026, the Commission said Akanni’s elevation was a testimony to his record as a scholar and media professional who had consistently deployed communication towards sustainable social change.

The letter, signed by the Head of Department, Administration, Yisau A. Adepoju, on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, said: “The news of your recent investiture as Fellow of the Society of Peace Studies (SPSP) was received with great delight.”

It added: “This auspicious milestone is a clear testimony to your laudable scholarly contributions to the field of journalism. As a thoroughbred professional and accomplished academic, you have consistently demonstrated passion and unwavering commitment to the promotion of Conflict-Sensitive Journalism.” FCCPC’s Letter of Congratulations to Prof. Akanni.pdf

The Commission also acknowledged Akanni’s longstanding interest in development communication, noting that the field remained important to fostering sustainable social change and improving quality of life, especially in developing countries.

“Given your remarkable track record, therefore, this honour comes as no surprise. It is both timely and richly deserved,” the FCCPC said, expressing confidence that the scholar would continue to contribute to Nigeria and the international academic community.

Akanni, a Professor of Journalism in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Lagos State University (LASU), is a journalist, development communication specialist and public affairs strategist whose career cuts across academia, professional journalism, public policy, media development and civil society advocacy.

His teaching and research interests span journalism practice, media ethics, development communication, political communication, media and conflict, strategic communication and the impact of artificial intelligence on contemporary media systems.

Before moving into academia, Akanni worked in Nigeria’s print media industry, experience which has enabled him to combine journalism practice with scholarship and the training of succeeding generations of journalists and communication professionals.

He is currently on sabbatical at the FCCPC, where he brings his background in journalism and strategic communication to bear on public engagement and institutional communication.

Akanni has also had international academic and professional exposure, including through the British Chevening Scholarship and advanced studies at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. His training has extended into development studies and human rights advocacy, giving his work an interdisciplinary orientation encompassing governance, communication and sustainable development.

Beyond the university, he has participated in professional and civic initiatives promoting ethical journalism, democratic governance, conflict resolution, media literacy and national development.

A regular newspaper and public affairs commentator, Akanni has written extensively on governance, education, media reform, national security, consumer rights, social cohesion and technological innovation.

He has equally worked as a trainer and consultant, designing and facilitating capacity-building programmes for universities, government institutions, regulatory agencies, media organisations and civil society groups, particularly in strategic communication, persuasive writing, media relations and public communication.

The FCCPC said the fellowship further underscored Akanni’s standing as an academic and practitioner whose work has consistently connected scholarship with journalism, public policy and national development.
