The family of late Nnaji Emmanuel Udenwe, from Umuchinjoku Uzam Oruku in Nkanu East Local Government  Enugu State, has petitioned the Enugu State Police Command, alleging indiscriminate arrest of innocent villagers after their father’s death.

In the petition dated December 15, the family claimed that their father died of natural circumstances.

The petition was signed by Mr. Chinedu Nnaji, the first son;  Emeka Nnaji, the second son; Chioma Nnaji, the first daughter; Benedict Nnaji, the second daughter and Mrs. Nkechinyere Nnaji, the second wife, the children and late Udenwe’s wife.

According to the family, their father was not a victim of murder as claimed by anonymous persons, who wrote an earlier petition to the police.

They stated that, “some uninformed and ignorant, unknown persons/individuals are currently making the natural death of our late father and husband a case at different police stations, alleging that our late father was killed by some people whom they have used a team of policemen from the Octopus Squad, Abakaliki Road, Enugu, to arrest and detain till today, being December 15, 2025.”

The family said despite visiting the said Octopus Squad with their lawyer, G.C Nwoye, during which they informed the Police that their father died naturally and that nobody killed or conspired to kill him, the squad had refused to back out of the matter.

The petition said: “Consequently, we have directed that they should release anybody they have arrested.

“We further told the Investigating Police Officer that the said faceless complainants are using the natural death of our late father for meaningless village politics and personal gain.

“Also, some youths and women from the community had protested at the Government House, Enugu, National Television Station and Police Headquarters, Enugu, over the unlawful/illegal arrest and detention of Mr. Adolphus Okoh and another person and we align our family with the protest.

“It should be noted for your information that the arrested persons, who are still in detention, are all aged above 70 years, seriously sick and may likely die in detention and this may escalate the already controlled crises in Oruku villages/community.”

They told the Police Commissioner that their father died a natural death and was buried according to the tradition and native laws and custom of Oruku village more than three months ago and there was no crisis either within their family or any other person or group in Oruku village.

They urged the Commissioner to investigate the illegal arrest and unlawful detention of some innocent persons from the Oruku community.
