The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a suspected impersonator, Salifu Olije Mustapha, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, Abuja, for allegedly posing as an EFCC operative and defrauding members of the public.
Mustapha was docked on Tuesday before Justice A.I. Akobi on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, misrepresentation and alleged fraudulent activities.
According to EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale, the defendant was accused of falsely presenting himself as both an officer of the Commission and a member of the Nigerian Air Force to aid fraudulent operations targeting unsuspecting residents.
One of the charges alleged that Mustapha, alongside two other suspects identified as Abubakar, who is currently at large, and Haruna Mamuda, conveyed individuals dressed in EFCC operational uniforms in a Toyota Corolla marked KTU399GT to Sheriff Plaza in Wuse II, Abuja, where they allegedly harassed and defrauded members of the public.
The Commission further told the court that Mustapha impersonated a public servant by claiming to be a Nigerian Air Force officer and used the false identity to deceive victims.
The defendant pleaded guilty to all four charges after they were read before the court.
Following his guilty plea, prosecution counsel R.U. Adaga urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Akobi subsequently adjourned the matter until June 1, 2026, for sentencing.
According to Oyewale, Mustapha was arrested after intelligence reports linked him to impersonation activities.
He added that investigators reportedly caught him wearing a fake EFCC uniform alongside two accomplices allegedly involved in extorting motorists in Abuja.
