From Godwin Tsa Abuja
It was an all round merry making event laced with great reliving memories when the alumni of Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM) class of 1997/1998 sets held their maiden reunion meeting in Abuja.
The event held at the Exclusive Serene Hotel, witnessed a large turnout of dignitaries who are alumni of the university, now renamed Joseph Sarwuan Tarkaa University Makurdi (JOSTUM), from within and outside the country, including political bigwigs, captains of industry, technocrats and celebrities.
The warm, sunny day and the cool music that rent the air provided the perfect backdrop for the celebration that saw members share stories, laughter, dance and memories over breakfast and lunch.
Indeed, the reunion meeting served as a heartfelt reminder of the strong bonds formed during student days and the lasting impact of the university.
Welcoming the alumni members, the Group Executive Director of Leadership Newspaper and Governing Council member of the university, Abraham Nda-Isaiah, an engineer, an alumni of the university, commended members of the association for turning out impressively to honour their Alma Mata.
Nda-Isaiah charged the members not to be deterred by any situation or circumstance but be encouraged by continuously participating in the association’s future activities in the state. He also enjoined them to step up their efforts towards encouraging contributing to their alma mater as a way of giving back to society.
On his part, the Chairman of the Abuja branch of the general alumni of the university and Consultant in Power and Development, George Njoku, appreciated the efforts of the members, especially the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), who painstakingly put together the memorable event, while lauding the class of ‘97/98’ that have made similar contributions for the good of the alma mater.
Njoku said the significance of the reunion was to provide a relaxed opportunity for the members to meet their old friends and possibly recall with nostalgia, the school life and how things have changed for good.
He urged members to always demonstrate the power of networking and explore ways to support one another in their personal and professional endeavours.
More importantly, Njoku expressed the need for the alumni to embark on some projects in the school as a way of giving back to the university and society at large.
Highpoints of the event was a reunion lecture series on financial literacy presented by Mimi Nongo, a Chartered Accountant and a dynamic entrepreneur and financial professional, and a presentation on ‘lifestyle modification as a modality for the prevention, delay and management of hypertension’ by Dr. Tersoo Nongo, Registrar/Associate Fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja.
On a sober note, members observed some minutes silence in honour of their late school mates.
Meanwhile, the planned election into various leadership positions of the association was deferred to await the adoption of a working constitution.
Consequently, members resolved that the members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) made of David Abeghe (Chairman), David Nongo, (Secretary ) and Kemi Wusah (Treasurer) should continue to run the affairs of the association, pending when an election is conducted.
