Former lawmakers from Plateau State have visited victims of the recent communal clashes in Mikang and Langtang North local government areas, where they admonished the people to learn to live in peace and harmony.
Crisis had erupted between the Motul community of Mikang and their Taroh neighbours in Langtang North over a disputed farmland on March 25, which left about eight people dead and millions of Naira worth of property destroyed.
The former lawmakers, who were led by the former Senator representing Plateau South, Napoleon Bali, told the people that development could only reach them in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Senator Bali, alongside former House of Representatives and state assembly members, visited the internally displaced persons camp to commiserate with the victims and present to them relief materials and cash donations.
They also assured the victims that the state government was working with all relevant authorities to restore peace in the affected areas.
Speaking while receiving the august visitors, the Mikang Local Government Chairman, Daniel kurgmi, said a resettlement committee had been put in place to handle the situation, and that normalcy was gradually returning to the affected communities.
He said that timely intervention of government in handling the situation was key as this had brought some relief and succour to the victims, while applauding the effort of the senator in distributing the relief materials.
Some of the victims, Lucy Nanjul and Julius Tanma, who spoke to newsmen, said the visit by the critical stakeholders would bring lasting peace to the affected communities.
