Former deputy governor of Imo State and a high-ranking member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Madumere, has announced his resignation from the party, effective from March 17, 2026.

In a statement, Madumere cited a need for personal reflection and a desire to explore new paths as reasons for his departure. He expressed gratitude for the relationships built during his time in the party and hopes for continued cordial ties.

His statement reads in part, “I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign my membership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) effective immediately.

“The decision, though difficult, has become necessary after a deep personal reflection on my political journey with the party. I sincerely feel it is time for me to explore new paths.

“It is my utmost desire and expectation that we all continue to maintain the cordial relationship that we have built together over the years, in our collective desire to build a better Nigeria. Thank you for your understanding. Please accept my best wishes always,” Madumere stated.

The former deputy governor, however, did not disclose the party he would pitch his political tent.

Madumere said his commitment to the collective goal of building a better Nigeria remains unchanged, despite his departure from the party.

A seasoned politician, Madumere served as deputy governor of Imo State from 2015 to 2019 under former Governor Rochas Okorocha. In 2018, a political rift led to a frosty relationship between him and Okorocha.

Subsequently, Madumere was accused of abandoning his duties and refusing to carry out official assignments.

On July 10, 2018, the Imo State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against him and set up a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations and report within seven days. And on July 31,  Madumere was removed from office.

However, the Imo State High Court sitting in Owerri later nullified the impeachment and ruled that the panel acted outside the seven-day constitutional timeframe.
