Liverpool have signed Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent for around £47.14m (€55m).
The 27-year-old Uruguay international becomes Liverpool’s latest defensive reinforcement after the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid and a series of fitness concerns that have left the club short of senior options at centre-back.
Liverpool will not pay Barcelona a loan fee but will cover Araujo’s full salary for the season. The defender has also taken a pay cut to facilitate the move.
Araujo, who will wear Liverpool’s No. 33 shirt, said he was delighted to join the club and believes the move has come at the right stage of his career.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araujo told Liverpoolfc.com.
“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.”
The defender added: “I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”
Araujo is expected to begin training with his new team-mates this week. His ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back gives Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola another experienced option as the club deals with several defensive absences.
The situation has been compounded by injuries. Joe Gomez suffered a muscle problem in Liverpool’s opening pre-season match and is expected to miss the Premier League opener against Newcastle, while teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined with an ACL injury.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Jacquet, signed from Rennes for £60m, has yet to feature in pre-season after missing the second half of last season following shoulder surgery. The 21-year-old has also made fewer than 100 senior appearances.
That leaves captain Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s only fully fit senior centre-back, making Araujo’s arrival an important short-term solution.
The Uruguayan brings considerable experience, having joined Barcelona in 2018 and gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Catalan club. He was also appointed one of Barcelona’s captains following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s departure in January.
However, Araujo’s recent spell at Barcelona has been affected by injuries, limited playing time and a prolonged absence from football. He made only 11 LaLiga starts last season and played 24 matches in all competitions.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick confirmed that Araujo was not suited to the style of football he wanted to play, paving the way for the defender to seek a fresh start in the Premier League.
For Liverpool, the loan arrangement limits the immediate financial commitment while giving the club the opportunity to assess Araujo over the season. If he rediscovers his best form, Liverpool have the option to sign him permanently for about £47m.
At his peak, Araujo was valued at considerably more, meaning Liverpool could potentially secure an experienced defender at a significantly lower figure if he successfully adapts to the Premier League.
The move also suits Barcelona, who can free up space in their squad and pursue defensive options more suited to Flick’s plans, while Araujo gets an opportunity to revive his career in England.
Liverpool’s priority had reportedly been to strengthen their attack, particularly in the wide areas, but the combination of injuries, Araujo’s versatility and the availability of a loan deal made the defensive move difficult to ignore.
For Liverpool, the immediate objective is clear: stabilise a defence that has been weakened by injuries and departures. For Araujo, the season represents an opportunity to restore the form that once made him one of Barcelona’s most highly regarded defenders.
