…leads Nigeria’s charge on energy transition

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha, joined top government officials and policymakers at the Nigeria Pavilion in Brazil to mark Nigeria Day at the ongoing COP30 climate summit. The DG delivered a brief but impactful remark, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to climate action and sustainable national development.
Dr. Mustapha later took centre stage at the High-Level Buildings and Cooling Pavilion Side Event, where he presented a keynote address highlighting Nigeria’s push for smart, energy-efficient cooling systems aligned with global climate goals.
The forum, convened in partnership with Daikin Industries, UNEP-U4E, and the International Energy Agency (IEA), focused on practical strategies to expand access to cooling while reducing environmental impact. Experts at the session underscored the importance of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and modern cooling technologies in curbing emissions across developing economies.

On the sidelines of the summit, Dr. Mustapha held discussions with officials of the NNPC on how government institutions can further champion and scale the adoption of sustainable cooling solutions across the country.
Reiterating Nigeria’s commitment under the Global Cooling Pledge, the ECN boss said the nation is prepared to harmonize standards, strengthen global and local partnerships, and drive innovations that enhance comfort, support productivity, and protect the environment.
The Nigerian delegation at COP30 included the Minister for Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh; the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha; and the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, Hon. Adelegbe Emmanuel Oluwatimehin.
