From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

The ongoing #EndBadGovernance protest recorded zero compliance in Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre of Anambra State.

No protest marches, by individuals or groups, were recorded within the Onitsha metropolis.

Residents went about their normal business, and major markets like Onitsha Main Market, Ochanja Market, Ogboefere, and Electromart remained open.

Some traders voluntarily stayed home, while others who opened their shops complained of low patronage, noting that customers from outside the state did not come.

The usually busy Onitsha Upper Iweka and other motor parks within the area witnessed scanty activity.

Onyeka Okeke, a transporter who spoke to our reporter, attributed the slow pace of activities to travellers from outside the state concluding their business yesterday and leaving, fearing a potential lockdown today.

He added that some traders stayed home out of fear for their safety, noting that the average Onitsha resident did not support the protest.

Filling stations and some eateries were open, but there was a general lull in activity.

Notably absent were the various security agencies, such as the police, army, and road safety officials, who usually occupy strategic locations within Onitsha.

Our reporter, who drove through Upper Iweka, Old Market Road, the main market axis, and parts of Nkpor, Obosi, Ogbaru, and the Ogbunike toll gate, did not encounter any security checkpoints or patrol teams in their usual locations.
