Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, the Emir of Argungu, has declared his emirate’s full support for the Kebbi State Law Reform Commission, recently inaugurated by Governor Dr. Nasir Idris.

Mera expressed his belief that the commission will excel in its duties, noting the need for quick dispensation of justice and laws that reflect the input of the people.

Addressing the commission delegates during their visit to his palace, the emir said, “I want to commend His Excellency, the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris, for his efforts to establish this Law Reform Commission and hand it over to the competent hand in the person of Justice Samaila Haruna Rasheed.”

He continued, “He is a retired Justice of the High Court, and I believe he is going to deliver on his new assignment.”

The emir encouraged the commission to organize town hall meetings to educate the public about their mission and how they can contribute to law reform. He assured them of his total support and expressed confidence that the commission would excel under the leadership of Justice Samaila Haruna Rasheed.

Justice Samaila Haruna Rasheed, Chairman of the Commission, informed the emir that their visit was to seek his royal blessings and guidance. He explained that there were abandoned laws in the state that needed to be reintroduced for the quick dispensation of justice.

“We want to also get the views and opinions of the people of these laws before we reintroduce these laws in the state,” Rasheed said. “We are going to liaise with all the emirates in the state, our traditional rulers, religious leaders, and major stakeholders to ensure we carry everybody along.”

He emphasized the importance of the people’s wisdom, voices, and views in the law reform process. He also acknowledged the crucial role of traditional rulers in this matter, as their people respect and listen to their counsel.

Alhaji Muhammad Bawale-Diri, Commissioner at the Law Reform Commission, speaking to newsmen after the visit, said that the emir’s support and advice would be taken seriously by the commission.

Diri explained that the commission’s responsibility was to make suggestions on laws that needed to be reformed, after thorough deliberation. These suggestions would then be ratified by either the Executive or the Legislative arm of the government.
