The Elim Christian Vocational Training Centre (CVTC) for the Disabled, an NGO, has organized a two-day training session for journalists in Benue state.

The training was on the “Enabling Resilience To Climate Change Related Risks Through Local CSOS’ Strengthening (ER2CC) project in Benue state funded by the European Union and christian blind mission, (cbm).

Welcoming participants at the training held in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, the Programme Manager, Emmanuel Egbodo, explained that Elim CVTC is implementing the “Enabling resilience to climate change-related risks through local CSOs’ strengthening (ER2CC) project in Benue state with intentions to ensure that persons with disabilities and their representing organizations are capacitated and actively involved in climate-change related policy processes in Benue state.

He said the project is also to strengthen the capacities of CSOs/OPDs including women and youth-led organizations, to adapt to climate-related hazards and natural disasters as well as strengthen their capacities to promote peace and social cohesion.

Speaking earlier on the training objectives, the Project Coordinator ER2CC, Rachel Dzever, urged journalists to use their platform to sensitise the public on the effect of climate change.

She said Elim was training journalists who would use their influence to reach the target population with correct and timely information on environmental and climate issues.

They also want journalists who will act as change agents using their respective platforms to champion advocacy and sensitization efforts to government and community members on the effects of climate change.

Dzever said Elim also want journalists who will be involved during key project activities such as review and domestication of the National Climate Change Policy, (NCCP), quarterly coordination meeting annual international day celebration, and flag off of tree planting exercise among others.

In her presentation, the facilitator, Dr Elizabeth Jeiyol, who took participants on an overview of climate change, climate change and sustainable development nexus as well as media and climate change reporting, lamented the increased spate of natural and man-made activities leading to climate change and called for stakeholders collaboration in taking action to combat the menace.
