Elder statesman, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule , was laid to rest in Kano, yesterday evening, after his remains were returned from Egypt where he died the day before. He was 87.
The former diplomat was buried at Walin Mai Kalgo Cemetery, in the state capital, after a funeral prayer led by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, at the palace.
Thousands of residents of Kano, including relatives, friends, sympathisers and top government officials attended the funeral prayer.
Incidentally, the prayer was held while his remains were right inside the compound of the Nigeria Prisons Service, because of the huge crowd at the palace for the Islamic prayer.
Those who attended the prayer were several governors and senators, including Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa, Governor Abdullah Umar Ganduje of Kano and Governor Shettima of Borno.
Among the lawmakers were Senator Kabiru Gaya, a former governor of the state, Senator Barau Jilbrin , Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Hon. Kawu Sumaila.
Also spotted at the Islamic funeral were business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, PDP leader in the state, Senator Bello Hayatou Gwarzo, former military administrator of Kaduna State, General Jafaru Isa and son of former Head of State , Alhaji Abba Abacha,
The remains of the elder statesman were brought into Nigeria from Egypt in an ash-colored military transport aircraft – Charlie Hercules C130- at about 4:00pm, amidst tight security.
