Woman rescued

From Paul Orude, Bauchi

Police operatives in Bauchi State have rescued an 18-year-old woman from a mob that allegedly attempted to lynch her after she stabbed her husband in the stomach during a domestic quarrel over a wrapper, a phone and money. The incident occurred in Lirr Bajar community, Dass Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement signed by the Bauchi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, the incident, which occurred on October 25, nearly cost the husband his life.

“On October 25, at about 0600hrs, what started as a heated argument between husband and wife turned bloody,” Habib said.

He identified the suspect as Fatima Dalha, 18, and her husband as a 30-year-old man.

According to the police spokesman, the argument started when Fatima demanded the return of her money, wrappers and phone, which she alleged were in her husband’s possession. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical fight, during which the suspect allegedly grabbed a knife nearby and stabbed her husband in the stomach.

“The husband fell and was bleeding,” Habib said, adding that the incident attracted angry residents who gathered at the scene and threatened to lynch the woman.

He said operatives from the Dass Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly intervened, rescued the suspect from the mob and rushed her injured husband to a hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

“Behind the uniform, behind the case file, are two young lives, a marriage of barely months, now shattered by anger that could have been resolved with words,” the PPRO said.

Habib disclosed that the suspect had been detained and the knife allegedly used in the attack recovered.

He added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, for discreet investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed concern over the rising cases of domestic violence among young couples.

“A moment of anger can destroy two lives forever. We urge couples to seek peaceful means through family, elders and lawful channels instead of resorting to violence,” the commissioner advised.

He also warned residents against jungle justice, reiterating the command’s commitment to ensuring that justice was served professionally and humanely.
