FC Barcelona were crowned La Liga champions on Sunday night after a commanding 2-0 victory over Real Madrid, as hundreds of football fans gathered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for an electrifying El Clásico watch party hosted by StarTimes Nigeria.

The event, held at King Jaja Hall, drew students, football lovers and passionate supporters of both Spanish clubs for an unforgettable night of live football, entertainment and fan interaction.

Barcelona took control of the match early, scoring twice in the opening half. Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock in the ninth minute with a stunning free-kick into the top corner, before Ferran Torres added a second in the 18th minute following a slick attacking move orchestrated by Dani Olmo.

The victory sealed Barcelona’s La Liga triumph and continued their impressive run against long-time rivals Real Madrid.

Back at UNILAG, the atmosphere inside King Jaja Hall reflected the drama unfolding on screen. Barcelona supporters erupted in celebration after each goal, while Madrid fans watched anxiously as their team struggled to find a response against the Catalans’ disciplined defence.

Ahead of kickoff, fans were treated to music, games, giveaways and interactive activities, with many attendees proudly dressed in Barcelona and Real Madrid jerseys.

Daniel Akinyemi, a UNILAG student, described the experience as one of the most exciting football viewing events he had witnessed on campus.

“You could feel the tension right from kickoff. When Rashford scored that free-kick, the whole hall exploded. Watching El Clásico with this kind of atmosphere makes it unforgettable,” he said.

Another attendee, Bolaji Alao, commended the sense of unity and excitement created during the event.

“It honestly felt like being inside a stadium because everyone was fully engaged. Even rival fans were enjoying the moment together,” she said.

Speaking at the watch party, StarTimes Nigeria Marketing Director, Oke Umurhohwo, said the initiative was designed to bring football fans closer to the biggest moments in the sport.

“El Clásico is more than just a football match; it’s one of the biggest sporting events globally, and Nigerian fans are deeply passionate about it,” he said.

“We want supporters to share in that excitement together, whether they’re attending the UNILAG watch party or following the action from home on StarTimes Sports Premium and the StarTimes ON app.”

Widely regarded as one of football’s biggest rivalries, El Clásico continues to attract millions of viewers around the world and enjoys a particularly strong following among Nigerian football fans.

The UNILAG watch party is the latest in a growing trend of communal football viewing experiences in Lagos, highlighting the increasing popularity of shared live sports entertainment among young audiences.
