The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned a former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, on fresh charges linked to the controversial $6 billion Mambilla Power Project.

Agunloye was brought before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal High Court, Apo, Abuja, on Thursday, September 18, 2025, to face an amended seven-count charge bordering on official corruption and fraudulent contract award.

One of the charges alleged that on May 2, 2003, while serving as minister, Agunloye knowingly disobeyed a directive of the then President conveyed at a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting when he approved a letter granting Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited the right to construct the 3,960MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station.

The EFCC said his action violated Section 123 of the Penal Code.

Another charge accused him, in collaboration with Sunrise chairman Leno Adesanya (currently at large), of presenting a false document to make the Federal Government enter into a contract with the company on May 22, 2003.

The document, titled “Construction of 3,960MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station on a Build, Operate and Transfer Basis,” was allegedly used fraudulently in the deal.

Agunloye pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Following his plea, EFCC counsel M.K. Hussein requested a date for the continuation of the testimony of the third prosecution witness.

Justice Onwuegbuzie subsequently adjourned the matter to Wednesday, October 9, 2025, for further hearing.
