The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied allegations that its operatives arrested or brutalised staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital during a recent incident that sparked outrage among Nigerians.

The Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale said on Friday that, the anti-graft agency said its operatives were at the hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 strictly for administrative purposes relating to the authentication of a document and not for any arrest operation.

The Commission said contrary to reports circulating in the media and on social platforms, no hospital worker was arrested or detained.

“The presence of the Commission’s operatives in the facility was purely administrative rather than a tactical operation to effect arrest,” the statement said.

The EFCC also rejected allegations that its operatives assaulted hospital staff, noting that no physical evidence of injuries or bodily harm had been presented against its officers.

Oyewale, however, disclosed that the agency had commenced an internal investigation into the incident and vowed to sanction any operative found culpable of violating its operational procedures.

“Any staff of the Commission found to have deviated from the Standard Operating Procedure of the Agency will not be spared,” he added.

The Spokesman further appealed to the public not to allow the controversy surrounding the incident to be used by “fifth columnists” to undermine Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign.

The agency also acknowledged the intervention of stakeholders seeking an amicable resolution of the dispute between the Commission and medical personnel at the hospital.
