There was wild jubilation at the Urualla Divisional Police Headquarters in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State as a 68,000-litre-capacity solar-powered borehole donated by the Dan Ngerem Sports Foundation was commissioned, ending more than 50 years of acute water scarcity in the area.
The commissioning ceremony was held on August 26 at the Divisional Headquarters.
The project, which now serves both police personnel and the host communities, has brought relief to residents who have lacked access to potable drinking water since the division was created in 1976.
Speaking at the event, the founder of the foundation, Chief Dan Ngerem, who was represented by Mr F.I.D.A. Illobi, reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to uplifting living standards and supporting critical public institutions.
Handing over the completed project to the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, the project contractor and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of DGIS Energies Ltd, Engr. Chibuike Onyejietu, FNSE, described the terrain as a major engineering challenge.
“For more than 50 years, officers and men of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Urualla, alongside members of their host community, lived with the daily pain of acute water scarcity. Every bucket of water came at a cost,” Onyejietu said.
“With groundwater lying at nearly 800 feet below the surface, the Urualla terrain had defeated several attempts to provide a sustainable water supply. What should have been a basic human necessity became a luxury,” he added.

Receiving the facility, CP Bosso described the gesture as highly commendable and timely, noting that it would significantly improve personnel welfare and the operational environment of the division.
He called on other well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations to emulate the foundation.
Following the commissioning, the commissioner embarked on a confidence-building patrol to community stakeholders and police formations in the area. He urged residents to provide timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and charged operatives of the Imo State Security Organisation to work closely with their respective DPOs.
He emphasised the need for effective collaboration and information sharing in maintaining peace and security, while urging vigilante operatives to operate within the law and exercise restraint in handling firearms.
A major highlight of the visit was CP Bosso’s courtesy call on the traditional ruler of the Ancient Kingdom of Urualla, His Royal Majesty, Eze Nnabugo Okosisi Ezeanyika.
The event was witnessed by the Chairman of Ideato North Local Government Area, Hon. Chukwunonso Okpareke, senior police officers and community leaders.
