One person was killed and two others rescued after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition collapsed in Aboru, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred around midnight at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, prompting the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to deploy its Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa, Oshodi Response Unit.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the team was dispatched at 12:56am on Thursday following a distress call and found workers trapped beneath the rubble.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the building was being manually demolished when the collapse occurred,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Two adult males were rescued alive from the debris during a coordinated search and rescue operation. Personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) administered first aid to the victims before taking them to a nearby health facility for further medical attention.
However, another adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure.
The rescue operation was jointly conducted by LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS, while the affected area was cordoned off to protect residents and provide emergency responders with unhindered access.
Community leaders and security agencies also assisted the emergency agencies at the scene as the operation continued.
Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged residents and developers to comply strictly with building regulations and engage certified professionals for demolition and construction work.
He also advised residents to report suspicious or unsafe building activities through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines.
LASEMA said the Lagos State Government was strengthening emergency response through equipment, capacity building and decentralisation of response units, with a target of achieving a 10-minute response time across the state.
