•Winners at Maths competition cart home cash, trophies, medals
The Chief Executive Officer of Sima Abacus Mental Maths Academy, Lagos, Mr. Anthony Donald, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to include the Abacus system into the school curriculum as obtained in Asian countries.
Donald made the suggestion at the maiden edition of Sima Abacus National Clubs and Inter-School competition held in Lagos, which attracted 18 schools and over 800 pupils.
His words: “I appeal to the government that the Abacus system be introduced in the school curriculum. I want the Federal Ministry of Education to look at how to include it in the school system. If this is done, it will enhance the mathematical skills of the children.
“We hope one day, the Abacus system will be included in the curriculum of the school. In the Asian countries, it is part of their school curriculum and this has led to the brain development of their children and good at solving Mathematics questions at ease. It will help to bring out the best out of our children.”
Anthony said the Abacus system helps in brain development of the children and also them to acquire creative skills and their thinking abilities.
According to him, the Abacus competition will go national next year, stating, “we intend to expand outside Lagos. We have one school each in Jos and Enugu.”
He disclosed that the competition is opened to pupils between 1 to 13 years and confirmed that it has three clubs where children are trained on how to use Abacus to solve Mathematics.
Anthony explained that he introduced Abacus in 2023 after he saw how children in one Asian country were using it to solve Mathematical problems during his trip to one of the countries.

“As a young kid in secondary school, I loved Mathematics. In SS111, I wrote the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and concentrated so much time on solving Maths, which affected my performance.”
The CEO of Abacus Maths Academy said the pupils will solve 100 questions in 10 minutes and revealed that 48 schools in Lagos have keyed into the use of Abacus.
In his remarks, the Marketing Manager, Mr. Effiok Effiong, said the outfit is providing Abacus education to children within the ages of 1 to 13 to help develop their mental skills.
He added that beyond helping to boost their mental calculation, Abacus helps the kids to build confidence, fast thinking and skills, adding, Abacus is a good foundation for the children’s academic excellence.
“We have centres where we train the children. There are also online learning opportunities for the kids. We have pupils from the UK, USA and several countries that are part of the training,” he noted.
The highlight of the competition was the presentation of prizes to various winners. In the Inter-school contest, first position in the different categories went home with a cash prize of #1500,000, a medal and trophy, second position received #80,000, plus a medal and trophy while the third place got #50,000, a medal and trophy.
Winners of inter-school champions for year 5 & 6 category, first position went to Ezeh Valerie of Krysta- Bal School, Oshodi, Omaram Chinaemerem of Div-Help School, Oshodi, Aduwo Elizabeth of Clemmy Schools, Ikotun. For year 4 category, first position is Okunlola Roqabah of Krysta-Bal School, followed by Akinbolaji Olamiposi of Mission Height School, Ijegun and Ajiboye Demisire of Honeyland Montessori School, Ikeja.
Others are year 3 category, won by Elukemi Erioluwa of Kids Network, Egbeda, followed by Dennis Alex of Honeyland School, Isolo and 3rd best went to Princess Deborah Daka of Ronel School Isherin. Year 2 category, John Ademuyiwa of Kids Network, Egbeda took the first position, followed by Suleiman Feyikemi of Clemmy School, Bakinson and Ogunleye Zion Michael of Krystal- Bal Oshodi while winners in the year 1 category are Valentine Ezeh of Krystal Bal, Oshodi, secured the first position, 2nd position went to Drarmola Bolade of Honeyland School, Ajasa and Oluwatise Oriyomi of Honeyland School, Ikeja, placed third.
