Edo doctor freed after paying N50m ransom, brother killed

From Tony Osauzo, Benin

Abducted Edo medical doctor Dr Ibrahim Tahir has been released from captivity after his family paid a N50 million ransom.

The victim was kidnapped with his younger brother on January 2 at their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while opening the gate to their compound.

The victim’s father disclosed yesterday that the ransom was paid in two tranches of N20 million and N30 million before his son was released on Wednesday at about 8 pm.

He said the money was raised by the family and through donations from non-governmental bodies, friends, and others.

“My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel good that he has been released, but I also lost another son.

“The family, organisations, friends and well-wishers contributed the N50 million ransom. My son was brushed by a bullet, but he is receiving treatment at a hospital,” the father of the freed medical doctor added.

He said he was told by the vigilantes and hunters, who laid an ambush for the kidnappers before his son was released, that one of the kidnappers also sustained gunshot wounds.

The Edo State Police Command PPRO, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the release of the medical doctor, over whose abduction members of the Edo State chapter of the NMA had threatened to down tools.

Dr Ibrahim was abducted alongside his younger brother on January 2 at their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while opening the gate to their compound.

The body of his younger brother, who was also a medical doctor, was found by Orley River, down City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, on 5 January, as he was said to have been killed by his abductors.
