Edo State Government has extended its clean-up exercise to New Benin Market, in Oredo Local Government Area.
Public Work Guard Coordinator, Mr. Osagie Yusuf, said the exercise was to make all the markets in the state free from filthiness.
The coordinator said the clean up exercise did not come to the traders by surprise, stressing that they have long expected it having seen other markets been visited with similar exercise.
“New Benin Market has been expecting us for more than one month. I actually heard some persons asking if we are just coming. We have sent messages round the market that we are coming, market women knew that we were coming. And if they were not aware or expecting us, you would not have seen the cooperation and calmness that you are seeing now,” he said.
He said the clean up exercise would bring sanity to the market.
“Uwa Market is empty, Oba Ewuare Market at St. Saviour is empty, there are shops inside the market. I want to tell you something, do you know that traders inside the market are happy?
“Let us use Oba Market as a case study; traders inside the market now sell. People now go inside the market and buy. But, before now, people preferred to buy from the people on the walkways but, now, people inside the market are selling,” he noted.
