The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Engineering (D.Eng., Honoris Causa) by the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.
The honour was bestowed during the university’s maiden joint convocation ceremony, which attracted prominent dignitaries, including Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, and senior members of the university management. In his remarks, Governor Ododo commended Dr. Abdullahi for his trailblazing contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly his leadership in expanding renewable energy solutions across the country.
Dr. Abdullahi, who attended the event alongside ECN directors, expressed profound gratitude for the recognition, noting that it further reinforces his dedication to advancing science, technology, and sustainable energy development.
He stated: “I am deeply honoured to receive the Honorary Doctorate Degree of Engineering (D.Eng., Honoris Causa) from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, during its maiden joint convocation ceremony. This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue advancing Nigeria’s energy sector and championing sustainable development through science, technology, and innovation.
My sincere appreciation goes to His Excellency Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, the University Chancellor, and the Vice-Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu, for bestowing this esteemed honour. I also extend my gratitude to my dedicated directors and colleagues at the Energy Commission of Nigeria.
Together, we remain committed to driving technological innovation—especially in renewable energy—and fostering partnerships that deliver lasting, transformative impact across our nation.”
The recognition comes at a pivotal time, as CUSTECH’s Barefoot Renewable Energy College, spearheaded by the ECN and described as Africa’s first dedicated clean-energy training institution, continues to progress following its August 2024 groundbreaking. Once completed, the college is expected to close Nigeria’s renewable-energy skills gap and accelerate clean-energy development nationwide.
