The eighth edition of the Nigeria eGovernment Summit, which will focus on using emerging digital technologies to address challenges in Nigeria’s election management, has been scheduled to hold in Lagos on September 10.
The summit, with the theme, “Mainstreaming Technologies in Nigeria Election Management,” is expected to bring together technology experts and other stakeholders to discuss digital solutions for improving the electoral process.
Chairman of the Nigeria eGovernment Summit and former president of the Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Engr. Lanre Ajayi, said the theme was informed by observed irregularities in the nation’s electoral process, which he said had eroded voters’ confidence.
Ajayi, in a statement, said Nigeria was entering another election cycle in January 2027, with political parties already commencing campaigns.
He said: “Nigeria is entering into another election cycle in January 2027, and the campaigns of political parties have commenced. As the election draws near, there is a need to adopt digital technology solutions that will enable hitch-free elections that are built on citizens’ trust.
“The summit will feature technology experts that will discuss the opportunities of adopting digital technologies in electoral processes.”
He also disclosed that nominations had commenced for governors who had demonstrated outstanding achievements in digital transformation in their respective states.
According to him, certificates and award prizes will be presented to the winners during the Nigeria eGovernment Summit 2026.
Speaking on the Nigeria eGovernment Excellence Awards 2026, Ajayi said Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State and Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State were among those nominated for the awards.
He said Okpebholo was nominated for the Digital Transformation Award in recognition of his administration’s SHINE Agenda, which he said had repositioned Edo as one of the states with a strong focus on state-owned digital infrastructure.
Makinde was nominated for the Public Safety & Security Technology Award following the delivery and deployment of two Diamond DA42 MNG Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft to support security operations in Oyo State.
Otu was nominated for the eGovernment Transformation category in recognition of what Ajayi described as a broad digitisation drive covering health administration, public information management and citizen-facing services under the People First Agenda.
Other nominees include Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, who was nominated for the Agricultural Technology Award for his administration’s Kaura Agricultural Development and Growth Agenda (KADAGE).
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State was nominated in the Education & Digital Learning category for reforms in the state’s education sector anchored on the Abia Fostering Innovation and Reform for School Transformation (AbiaFIRST) programme and accompanying digital infrastructure.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State was nominated in the Healthcare Digitalisation category for the rollout of digital systems across primary and secondary healthcare facilities, as well as the launch of the Enugu eHealth Card.
Sule was nominated in the Ease of Doing Business & Investment Facilitation category for a seven-year reform programme which, according to Ajayi, had moved Nasarawa into the top 10 most competitive states in Nigeria on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking.
Also nominated are Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and Governor Pastor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who was nominated for the Digital Inclusion, Smart City & Urban Technology Award.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was nominated for the Energy, Transport & Mobility Innovation Award.
