DSTV: Rep kicks over incessant price hike

Rep-Obi-Aguocha

From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

The member of the House of Representatives representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North / Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, has berated Multichoice, a Pay TV company, for incessant hike in its DSTV and GoTV packages in Nigeria.

Aguocha, while reacting to the recent hike in price by the company, said the development was unacceptable to Nigerians. The lawmaker told The Sun that the monopoly enjoyed by Multichoice in Nigeria is strangulating the citizens.

Recall that Multichoice, last Wednesday, announced a new price regime for DStv and GOtv packages. The latest price hike, which is the fourth by the South African company in the last three years, has been general condemned.

Multichoice had increased the prices of
DStv and GOtv packages in March 2023, April 2023 and December 2023.

Aguocha, who noted that the endless price hike is unacceptable, said he would sponsor a motion, immediately the National Assembly reconvenes next week, for the parliament to look into the issue.

According to him, “the monopoly the DSTV is enjoying is strangulating Nigerians. They are taking undue advantage of Nigerians. I will bring up a motion that will stop DSTV from taking advantage of Nigerians, because they are strangulating Nigerians with their price hikes and all that, without even providing adequate services for Nigerians.”

He added that the House will look into the monopoly enjoyed by Multichoice in the country, and ” we must, like they do in South Africa, allow Per-As-You-View. ”
