The Lagos State Government has extended its free eye screening, corrective lenses, and comprehensive health checks to officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos Strategic Command.
This is in recognition of the agency’s collaboration during the recently concluded Drivers’ Care Initiative.
The gesture follows the successful completion of the first phase of the Drivers’ Care Programme, implemented through the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics.
The initiative provided professional drivers across the state with free eye screening, prescription glasses, drug testing, and sensitisation exercises in partnership with the NDLEA.
In a similar outreach, the state government had earlier extended the programme to the Nigeria Police Force, with about 1,000 police officers benefiting from free eye screening and corrective lenses under the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative.
Speaking at the flag-off of the programme for NDLEA officers in Lagos, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, stated that the extension of the medical outreach underscores the State Government’s appreciation of the NDLEA’s strategic support during the Drivers’ Care Programme, which positively impacted thousands of professional drivers statewide.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and well-being of residents, particularly transport operators, and urged transport unions and fleet owners to ensure that drivers do not operate vehicles under the influence of illicit substances, in the interest of public safety.
Also speaking at the event, the Assistant Commander General of Narcotics, Lagos Strategic Command, Mr. Abubakar Liman Wali, commended the State Government for the initiative and reiterated the Agency’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the State to promote a drug-free society and safer road environment.

In a related development, the Lagos State Government has successfully screened 1,000 police officers under the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative, a medical outreach programme designed to support the health and welfare of police officers in the State.
The initiative, which commenced on Friday at the Police Headquarters in Ikeja provided officers with free eye screening, prescription lenses, and health checks.
The programme is fully funded by the state government, as part of the administration’s broader commitment to strengthening institutions that safeguard lives and property.
Speaking after the outreach, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, noted that the extension of the programme to police officers followed a request by the Inspector General of Police, in recognition of the vital role officers play in maintaining law and order across Lagos.
He explained that the Police Care Initiative builds on the success of the recently flagged-off Drivers’ Care Programme, which commenced at Lillypond Terminal, Apapa, and moved through Eleko Junction and Obalende before concluding its first phase at Iyana-Iba Park.
The drivers’ initiative targets 10,000 professional drivers across the state and offers free eye screening and glasses, free drug testing and sensitisation, as well as complimentary Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) cards.
Similarly, the extension of the programme to police officers demonstrates the state government’s appreciation of the indispensable role of security personnel in protecting residents and maintaining public order.
Ensuring that officers are medically fit enhances operational efficiency and strengthens the overall security architecture of the State, Adekoya added.
With the successful completion of the 1,000-officer target, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustained welfare-driven interventions that directly impact those who serve the public.
