The very word dentist used to bring up feelings of dread. Dr. Tyler Brady has helped to redefine dentists as caring medical professionals who can make even the most fear-inducing procedure a smooth one. And at his practice, aptly named The Haven, this Texas-based cosmetic dentist also focuses on those in need. Every month he donates a veneer set to give people something to smile about. He also debunks common misconceptions about dental issues such as these.
Sugar Causes Cavities
While sugar isn’t great for the teeth, it is not sugar itself that is the culprit for oral issues. When we consume sugar, it is turned into an acidic byproduct. When this acid and bacteria combine, it can lead to cavities. Dr. Brady has seen this countless times and while he can correct the damage, he tries to help his patients focus on prevention rather than repair.
Brushing Harder Isn’t Better
The term squeaky clean does not apply to teeth! Dr. Brady advises that the harder your brush, the more damage you can inflict on your teeth and gums. Rough brushing can result in enamel damage, overall oral sensitivity, and even an increased chance of cavities.
Don’t’ Rinse After Brushing
Yes, you read that correctly. Dr. Brady cautions patients that by rinsing after brushing, you are getting rid of beneficial compounds like fluoride. Instead, just spit out excess toothpaste and let the remaining compounds protect your teeth.
Handle With Care
If you notice your gums are bleeding, do not brush vigorously! This is a delicate tissue that should be handled with care. Not to mention bleeding gums are a serious sign of oral problems . Gently brush your teeth and gums to help fight gum disease but make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
Prevention is the Best Cure
Like many other areas of medicine, you should see your dentist for routine care. Do not ever wait until there is a problem to see a dentist, cautions Dr. Brady. You only get one set of teeth, and prevention is preferable to a cure. By maintaining your oral health and staying a step ahead of problems, you are saving a lot of time, money, and subjecting yourself to preventable dental procedures.
Dr. Brady has similar advice for all of his patients: brush, floss, and visit your dentist twice a year. For this general and cosmetic oral expert, prevention is the best cure.
