White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has announced her decision to leave the Trump administration, saying she can no longer balance the demands of one of the most high-pressure jobs in government with her responsibilities as a mother of two young children.
Leavitt, who has served as President Donald Trump’s press secretary for the past year and a half, announced her departure in a statement on X, describing her tenure as the “honor and adventure of a lifetime”.
She expressed gratitude to Trump for giving her the opportunity to work closely with him, including serving in the West Wing, spending time in the Oval Office, travelling with the President and meeting foreign leaders and Americans across the United States.
Leavitt said her greatest privilege had been representing Trump at the White House podium, where she frequently defended his policies and administration while confronting what she described as liberal media coverage of the President.
“Most of all, I am thankful to the President for entrusting me with the distinct privilege of speaking on his behalf at the White House podium,” she said.
However, she said becoming a mother and returning to work after the birth of her daughter forced her to reconsider her ability to continue in the demanding position.
“Since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary,” Leavitt said.
She described the decision to leave as “bittersweet”, saying it would allow her to begin a new chapter in her life.

Despite stepping down from her official White House position, Leavitt said Trump had asked her to continue working as one of his top advisers from outside the administration. President Trump also confirmed that she would remain an outside adviser after leaving the role.
She also pledged continued support for Trump’s political movement and the Republican Party.
Leavitt thanked President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and members of the Trump family for their support during her tenure. She also praised White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, saying Wiles had empowered her from the time she joined Trump’s campaign.
She further acknowledged members of Trump’s Cabinet, White House staff, colleagues and friends, describing them as accomplished people committed to serving the country.
Leavitt reserved special appreciation for her husband and family, saying they had made sacrifices that enabled her to serve as White House press secretary.
Her departure marks the end of a high-profile tenure in which she became one of the most visible public defenders of Trump’s administration, regularly using White House briefings to promote the President’s agenda and challenge his critics.
Leavitt said she looked forward to supporting the administration from outside the White House while continuing her political advocacy during the remaining years of Trump’s presidency.
