The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN),  appeared to have told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to reject election results before announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

ECOWAS, AU, and the UN, in a statement, particularly focused on the presidential election results which indications, according to results released by INEC, showed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is in a comfortable lead.

The Communications Division of the ECOWAS Commission called on all candidates, political parties and Nigerians to continue to exercise patience, calm and restraint, in order to allow for the full results of the election to be released by INEC.

ECOWAS, AU and UN further said at the conclusion of the process, all aggrieved parties and persons are encouraged to resort to legal means to seek redress, in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of Nigeria, and as previously agreed in the Peace Accord of 13 February, 2019.

Meanwhile, Protect Nigeria Group has warned against post-election chaos in the country.

The group also warned against foreign interference in the nation’s electoral process, adding that Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, should be allowed to determine its political future.

In a statement by its secretary, Abdulwahab Ekekhide, the group said its call was as a result of the delay in announcing the winners of the general elections held at the weekend.

The group further blamed the current tension in the polity on foreign interference, as well as attitude of some Nigerians who lacked a deep sense of patriotism.

“The tension emanated from international interference in Nigeria’s electoral process by some foreign NGOs in conjunction with some embassies and political class,” Ekekhide said.
