Declare Plateau killings national emergency, Reps tell ONSA

House-of-Reps

From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

The House of Representatives has urged the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to declare the incessant killings in Plateau State as a national emergency.

The House also mandated the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that killings in the state are brought to book.

Similarly, the parliament mandated the Operation Safe Haven to identify and evacuate all bandits’ cells within Plateau State. These followed the adoption of a motion by Dachung Bagos on “the need for urgent intervention on the killings in some local government areas in Plateau State, “ at yesterday’s plenary.

Bagos, in his motion, informed the House that there have been recurring attacks in some parts of Plateau State, in which several people have been killed and farmlands completely destroyed.

The lawmaker lamented that “despite the provision on the security and right to life by the Constitution, there has been an increase in the rate of insecurity and killing of innocent souls by people who have been tagged as ‘suspected herdsmen’ in Nigerian, of which my state and my constituency have been part of the areas affected.

“Recently, there have been quite a number of attacks in some local government areas on the Plateau and some communities within my constituency. “

He said: “Seven miners of my immediate constituency were gruesomely killed in cold blood on July 9, 2023, around Farin Lamba of Jos South LGA, Plateau State. Most of my people live in fear of the unknown due to insecurity, and can no longer access their farmlands with ease, which is their main source of livelihood.

“Unless the issue of insecurity is handled with doggedness at all levels in the country, citizens will experience food shortage as Plateau is one of the main producers of food crops in the country.”
