On Friday last week, a new Commissioner of Police, Lawal Abubakar was deployed to Kano State. He succeeded Sumaila Shaibu Dikko, who recently bowed out out the force.
He assured men and officers of the command at the Police Officers Mess, Bompai Kano, on Monday, that he would strive to stamp out crimes and criminality, plegding not to take side with any group, institution, party or individual in the discharge of his assignment.He appreciated the efforts of his predecessors, confessing that he inherited a robust structure. He hoped to improve upon it.
He said that he had discussed with departmental heads, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), tactical commanders and other supervisory officers: “I impressed it upon officers to work in accordance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the Constitution and the vision of the Inspector General of Police to restore police primacy and bequeath to the nation a modernised,
citizen-led, rule of law guided and professional Police Force that Nigerians can truly trust and depend on.”
He explained that his administration would revolve around community-based policing and partnering with sister security agencies, including the military, Air Force, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Vigilance Groups, voluntary security agencies and special constabularies in the state.
He added that he would liaise with other
critical stakeholders including the Judiciary, traditional rulers, religious leaders, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), members of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC),
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), eminent persons, the media, human rights groups, transport unions, traders’ associations and youth organisations.
He explained that “Operation Restore Peace” would replace “Operation Puff Adder,” operational under the previous administrations: “We will tackle thuggery (Daba), drug abuse (Kwaya) and other heinous crimes.
“We are recommitted to a robust community policing engagements, intelligence-led policing, visibility policing, the use of technology in tackling crimes. I seek the support and prayers of the people in fighting crimes.”
Abubakar assumed office as the 43rd Commissioner of Police, Kanov State. He was redeployed from Enugu State.
