The Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngene has described corruption in the judicial system as threat to fair hearing and access to justice in the country.

Ngene said corruption within the justice delivery system manifest in form of bribery, manipulation and perversion of justice for monetary or political gratifications.

He stated this in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Friday during the ceremony marking the state 2025/2026 Legal Year.

He opined that there was no denying the fact that integrity issues exist within the Nigerian judicial system.

The Chief Judge noted that public perception of corruption among judicial and court officers was a discouraging factor that keep some people far from the courts and that some people now choose to resolve their conflicts themselves rather than in the courts because of the menace.

He averred that Judges must be “true and faithful to the constitution and the law”.

Ngene urged judicial officers in the state to maintain highest ethical standards and reminded them that any act of misconduct undermines credibility of the entire justice system.
