The All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Alhaji Mustapha Gubio, has escaped an attack by gunmen suspected to be Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists following an ambush in the northern part of the state.
Gubio’s convoy came under heavy attack after it ran into an ambush by ISWAP fighters along Gubio-Kareto-Damasak road in northern Borno on Thursday evening.
The APC governorship hopeful with dozens of his political allies and supporters, were returning to Maiduguri after a visit to the area located along the Lake Chad shores.
The convoy had encountered Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along the road by the terrorists. Sources said an Armoured Personnel Carriers in the convoy ran over the IEDs, causing an explosion, which damaged the vehicle.

In the midst of the confusion, the terrorists who positioned themselves around the area reportedly attempted to ambush the convoy, but were confronted with relentless firing from the security forces.
According to security sources, the Police Special Forces and the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) men in the convoy eventually repelled the attack.
The latest incident occurred nearly six years after a similar attack on Governor Babagana Zulum’s convoy by Boko Haram.
Terrorists ambushed Zulum’s convoy on July 29, 2020, while returning from Baga. His convoy was ambushed while returning from Baga where he distributed food to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Five people were killed including three policemen.
Earlier in September 2019, his convoy also ran into terrorists ambush at Konduga while returning from Bama in the central part of the state. He escaped unhurt.
