The Archbishop of Calabar Archdiocese, His Grace Most Rev. Joseph Ekuwem says corruption and bad governance remains Nigeria’s fundamental problems.

Most Rev. Ekuwem disclosed this in Calabar while presenting a communique issued following the second plenary meeting Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN at Ikot Ekpene Diocese in Akwa Ibom State.

The second plenary meeting of the CBCN had a theme: ‘Hope does not disappoint: Working together for a just nation”.

According to the Archbishop, “the fundamental cause of our problems as a nation is corruption and bad governance.

“Corruption has spread unhindered like a deadly cancer to all areas of our national life, aggressively destroying the fabric of the nation.

“Politicians are more preoccupied with securing and retaining power and less concerned with good governance.

“They have abandoned their duties and seem more concerned with the pursuit of their personal political agenda and perfecting strategies to grab power in 2027”, the Archbishop said.

He emphasized that the nation may collapse if the current situation lingers and called for a radical change to where the common good drives our political, economic, social and cultural life.

Most Rev. Ekuwem also said the Catholic bishops expressed concern over the erosion of family values, deviation from liturgical norms, the challenge of private ministries and stressed the urgency of catechesis to help preserve gospel values.

The communique was endorsed by Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the Archbishop of Owerri and president of the CBCN as well as the Donatus Ogun, the Bishop of Uromi and secretary of the CBCN.
