The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has met with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state chairmen from across the country, ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16.

The state chairmen were led to the meeting, which was held at the Oyo State Governor’s Lodge, in Asokoro, Abuja, by the chairman of the Forum of PDP state chairmen, Tony Aziegbemi..

Aziegbemi, while speaking with journalists after the meeting, said the crisis in the party is not necessarily about the PDP, but about the future of Nigeria.

He said: “Today, the Forum of the PDP met with the Governor of Oyo State. We decided to pay him a courtesy visit because of the fantastic role he is playing to stabilise the party.

“This fight that you are seeing within the party is not a fight within the PDP per se. It is a fight between darkness and light. It is a fight about the future of this country. It is a fight about democracy.”

Earlier, the embattled national chairman, Umar Damagum, had met with the state chairmen at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge, also in Asokoro, Abuja.

In a communique at the end of the meeting, the state chairmen pledged support for Damagum, and urged delegates to prepare for the national convention.

The communique read in part: “The Forum unequivocally reaffirms its total support, confidence and loyalty to the National Chairman of our great Party, Ambassador Umar Damagun and the entire National Working Committee (NWC).

“The Forum applauds the courageous and well-considered judgment delivered by Justice Akintola, which has paved the way for the conduct of the forthcoming National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“The Forum urges all delegates, as duly recognised and provided for in the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), to begin preparations in earnest to participate in the convention and to elect credible, competent and loyal men and women into the National Working Committee.”
