The Speaker, Taraba State House of Assembly, Mr. Peter Abel Diah, has assured that members of the Assembly would vote to reflect the choices of the people in their consideration of the proposed amendment of the 1999 constitution.

Diah stated this, on Tuesday, in Jalingo, at the resumption of the House from recess.

Diah stated that the adoption of the provisions of the constitution that were under consideration was of such significance that members of the Assembly were encouraged to interact with their constituents in the course of the recess to hold talks with them on the issues so that the voting on the issues would reflect the choices of the people.

“Members will need to consult their respective constituencies to distill their opinions on the items slated for amendment so that our decisions can reflect the wishes and desires of our people”, he said.

Diah said that the agitations across the country and calls for outright cessation were regrettable and insisted that such agitations and calls must be “articulated through appropriate channels and in a way that does not endanger the peace and unity of the nation.”

He noted that every union around the world is constrained by some form of challenges but the determination of the members to remain united and focused has remained a potent weapon for overcoming those constraints.

He further insisted that the History and Social Studies should be encouraged in schools so that the “young generation would understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by our founding fathers for the realization of this country,” and the horrors of the last civil war experience so that they would be able to make informed choices.

The House went on recess since August 17 and resumed today with twelve out of the twenty one members in attendance.
